Making New Friends at Church
Typically when we enter a large venue like a sporting event or a concert, we don’t greet one another even though we share a common reason for being there. So what makes us want to connect to others at church? I know when I arrive at church there are certain people I want to talk to and catch up with. Sometimes, I have to step out of my comfort zone and talk to someone new.
It’s hard to walk up to a complete stranger and introduce yourself but we’re all here to learn to recognize the Source that connects us all to each other. I ask people what brought them to the church or how they found us. I ask them if they’d like to be on the church email list so they get the weekly updates “From Yvonne.” I tell them about an upcoming event like movie night or the David & Friends Concert and offer to share a bowl of soup with them after church just to get acquainted. Maybe you could use some of these strategies to approach people you don’t know at church, too.
It’s building community at its finest. Try to make a connection with someone sitting close to you. You never know who you might meet and what that friendly outreach might mean to someone.
