We are approaching the longest night of the year here in the northern hemisphere. As we do, we can see nature settling into the stillness of winter all around us. And, even as plants and animals quiet for the season, many of us are getting busier and busier in anticipation of family gatherings and time with friends. In the coming week, if you can, make a few minutes for yourself, light a candle, and take some conscious breaths to calm your mind, your body, and your spirit. Reflect on the year that is coming to a close. Sit in the space of now and simply notice where you are, who you are, and how it feels just to be you. Slip into that place between the past and the yet-to-come in which we all live and breathe.
This is the time of year, too, when we celebrate the return of the light. Just like in life, when darkness seems all around, we have the opportunity to light the candle that others need. The time around Christmas finds us at The Church Within doing this in very exciting ways.
A group of about 10 volunteers from TCW, including Santa Claus Mark Proctor, took 250 bags of cozy hats, gloves, and socks to the consumers of Midtown Mental Health. Many of the men and women at Midtown have only the street to call home. The gift bags also include personal items that make life on the street just a little more comfortable, and were gifted as part of a holiday celebration with Midtown Mental Health’s staff chili cook-off providing food and Rhonda Collins-Jourdan playing holiday favorites. One of our volunteers shared that this was her second year attending the event, and that there is just something incredible that you feel upon entering the door for this every time. We hope you’ll join us next year for this celebration
We are also in the midst of packing up all the delicious fixings for ham dinners for the holidays for our friends over at Concord Center. This is another of our long-time traditions. Along with these food items for 60 families, many of you took the opportunity to provide the gifts requested on the stockings on the tree for more than 35 of Concord’s children. What an amazing experience to be able to offer the meal and gifts around which many happy holiday memories can be made.
And, even with all this going on, we will have a Sunday morning filled with Christmas traditions and music from around the world featuring Rhonda Collins-Jourdan and all her amazing friends, and narration provided by our own Frank Ziegler. You won’t want to miss this or the time for soup that will follow for fellowshipping with friends this Sunday, January 22nd.
