Due to the treacherous weather we’re currently experiencing, the sisters have asked us to cancel this event for tomorrow. They are so concerned about us driving in the blowing snow and frigid temperatures. The good news, however, is that they have given us March 23rd as an alternate date! Mark your calendars now for the further adventures to be had in Oldenburg!

The Church’s annual trip to Oldenburg to offer soothing services (hand and foot massages, Reiki, facial massage, etc.) to the sisters who live in the retirement community of the convent, is quickly approaching on SUNDAY, January 26, 2014. If you’ve participated in the past, you know what a blessing this is for the sisters as well as for those of us who perform the services. If you’ve not been a part of this healing day in the past, please plan on joining us! It’s a great way to get to know other church members and participate in a meaningful way to our outreach in the community! Dress comfortably (it’s usually VERY warm in the area where we work)
We will be carpooling immediately following the service and so need to know the number of people planning to attend and those who would be available to drive. Please contact me by email (firstname.lastname@example.org) to sign up or ask any questions you may have about the event. If you are unable to attend but would like to contribute to help purchase supplies and snacks, Frank Ziegler will be at church next Sunday to accept your gifts.

Led by the returning light, as the wheel of the year turns to a new beginning, we have the opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the world and to service. While many have sworn off the idea of the New Year’s Resolution, it is worth exploring in our lives those areas in which we have true resolve.
Make some time today or tomorrow to really look at what you wanted to accomplish over the last year that you got done. Reflect on those things that you wanted to shift but that have stayed the same. Recognize the difference in how your body and emotions respond to these ideas. There is wisdom in how you feel about these rememberings.
As you lean into the new year, decide what you want to make of the world and find within yourself all that you need to accomplish this. When we make the choice to serve the world, to do all we can to impact it in great and small ways, then we have the opportunity to be who are are meant to be. Being of service allows us to call forward the truest parts of ourselves to answer the call to love offered by others. Being of service also allows us to identify those parts of us that no longer serve us. We can identify them because they stand in the way of relationship with others.
Once you find that which is drawing you forward into the new year, do whatever most makes sense to you to truly create sacred space around those ideas. Write them down. Light a candle. Share them with friends. Take a hot soak in the tub and let them float around in your mind until they take hold. Or, you might consider joining our own Doug Poe, Reverend Judith, and Rhonda & Donnie CJ for a time of release and renewal tonight, 31 December 2013, at 7:00 pm at The Church Within.
Regardless how you decide to enter into the new year, we’re glad to walk forward with you in whatever way we can as a people. Let yourself be supported and offer support where you can. Let us all be part of the walk home together.
Blessings on your every breath,
PS: Reverend Jayne has had the idea to snag up all the hats, gloves, and warm socks that we can as they go on sale as the holiday season ends. We’ll keep these safe for next year’s giving to Midtown Mental Health. It’s a way that we can give more for less. So, if you’re so inclined, keep an eye out for such sales and bring your finds to church!

THE PATH WITHIN
by Resta Burnham
Time passes by. We ask why
we are living in this world.
Days come and go. Still we don’t know
if there is meaning in this world.
Now there’s a path that opens into darkness,
leads me past everything my heart has
thought was true. And if I choose to go within,
what will I find, what monsters
guard the meaning for my life,
the symbols I am dreaming? Is it worth
the painful search to go within?
Time passes by. So long we’ve tried
adjusting to the world.
Years come and go. Still our souls
yearn for meaning in this world.
Again the road that leads into the forest.
Shall I go? Have I the courage to explore it?
Can I bear what’s hidden there deep within?
Would you come, take my hand and
walk beside me? Joined as one,
we can face what’s been denied,
be healed by light, undo the night that lies within.
First, Opening night for Raft of the Medusa, a Theatre Within production, is this Friday night, October 4th at 8pm! This play will run through Oct. 6th and Oct. 10th thru the 15th. For more details and ticket information visit our website and click on “Support the Church” link.
Second, This Sunday (October 6) at 10am will be having our Blessing of the Animals Celebration. This will be a part of our regular service in the Celebration Room. You’re encouraged to bring your animal companion (dogs, cats, chickens, turtles, snakes, birds, etc) for a special time of blessing.
Children are encouraged to bring your stuffed animals to receive blessings as well! You can also bring a photo of your animal companion (if it’s too challenging to bring them to church) for a blessing.
I have had a special connection and love for animals all of my life. I have also been greatly influenced by St. Francis and Albert Schweitzer. Toward the end of his long life, Schweitzer was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for dedicating his whole life to teaching that, “We must never permit the voice of humanity within us to be silenced. It is man’s sympathy with all creatures that first makes him truly a man.”
Truly, all God’s critters have a place in the choir. Invite your friends who might want to have their precious animal companion blessed as well.
With love & gratitude,
As The Church Within embarks on an exciting journey under the new leadership of Reverend Richard Brendan, the theatre outreach of the church has reclaimed the name The Theatre Within. The company and name Theatre Non Nobis was gifted to the church in a time of transition, and we respectfully thank founders Jeffrey Barnes, Christie Beckmann and Kirk Fields for that gift, and honor the time Theatre Non Nobis spent with The Church Within.
Please welcome The Theatre Within back to Indianapolis, and back to its home at The Church Within, with our next production of Raft of the Medusa by Joe Pintauro. Show dates are October 4-6, 10-13. Mark your calendars now!
